Week 7 - day 5 trade log and musings

That was a - well - interesting week to so the least ! 

My net profit ranged from roughly £5,500 to £11,500 through the week. 

Started off on Monday ending up slightly on last week (by £50) but by Wednesday had lost £5k and was sitting on just over £5,500 profit. This was due to the property stocks I have bets on (Taylor Wimpey and Barratt). 

Then jumped a massive £3,300 on Thursday to end on just a touch over £9,000. 

Increased that profit by a further £2,300 on Friday - finishing the week on £11,445. 

Not a bad end to a dismal mid-week hit.

Difficult couple of days - lost £5k

It’s been a difficult couple of days; down £1,818 on Tuesday and down a further £3,086 yesterday !

In other words, I lost just short of £5,000 in two days. Wow – this is spread betting for you...

My biggest losers have been the property company bets; Taylor Wimpey & Barratt Developments. A comment from JP Morgan seems to what triggered it all – they are turning bearish on the UK housing market. Well, let’s see what happens.

I am now down to 13 bets, I need some more – so looking for some buy ideas please !?

How I missed a £10k profit...

I conducted a little experiment on my trading since I began this experiment. I wanted to know what would have happened if I had not closed the bets I have closed.

So I did a little what-if analysis.

And the results....are staggering ! Well, to me anyway.

The difference in the bottom line is just short of £10,000. Yup, you read that right, TEN THOUSAND POUNDS !

Am I a victim of over-trading - I have actually mentioned this before in one of my old posts and thought I might be but did not heed my own advice, now I most certainly am.

Some of the bets would have been automatically closed by hitting the stop loss (either the initial one or the trailing one which I always implement as profits rise).

These are; Bodycote, Anite, Lookers, Sepura, Petrofac, Costain, Elementis, Moneysupermarket, Delcam, Paypoint, TalkTalk, Nichols, Headlam, VP, SOCO, iomart and Smart Metering.

Week 6 - day 4 trade log

Today was a good day, up £1,188 on yesterday.  

Closing in on £9k profit again which will be great and hoping I can stay at that level or above.  

My three new bet; Barratt, Bellway & Taylor Wimpey are all at a loss at the moment but I am going to hold onto them. The other bet losing at the moment is Intertek but, again, I am going to hold onto it.  

Why I am holding on to my losing bets I hear you ask?
Well, my next post (following in a few minutes) will show in gory detail, the result of my over-trading.   I wondered how the bets I have closed since beginning this experiment have fared since I closed them. And, the results are quiet staggering – I need to stop trading so much effectively !!  

My new strategy is to resist closing and opening new bets.

Week 5 musings

That was a great end to the week - finished up on just over £9,000 in profit.

Quite a week of change too - closed 4 bets, 2 for profit, 2 at a loss.
The two for profit though were good, sold Bodycote for a profit of £2392. Also sold moneysupermarket after its stellar performance on Friday for £485 profit. No doubt too soon but I am happy with that as a few days ago I was at a loss of £500 and considered cutting it then.

Will see what next week brings but hopefully I can hold onto most of my profits. 
At this point I am 31% on the way to my target of £60k. At this rate I will hit my target in 6 months, not a year ! But, as always with the markets, let's not count our chickens before they hatch - things could certainly change.

Friday update

Well, thank goodness I didn't sell moneysupermarket. Up 7.2% at the moment.

Profits sitting at just over £8k for the first time. Up a massive £2.8k on yesterday's close.

Week 5 - day 4 trade log

Today, touched £6k briefly but ended on £5.3k. Not bad. Profits are climbing again.

So in the last few days as you will see from my trade log, I have closed a few bets and opened a few new ones. My portfolio needed a bit of adjusting and so I cut Sepura, Lookers and Petrofac. None of them were going anywhere and you have to cut the losers / nowhere goers after some time I feel.

In their place, I opened bets on moneysupermarket dot com, GKN, Telecity and Delcam. All of which, except moneysupermarket dot com have made me money (so far) so it seems like I made the correct choice. Am watching moneysupermarket dot com and at over £500 down at the moment, I might consider cutting my losses soon. Let's see what the trading statement says tomorrow.

I am waiting to open a bet on Cineworld. I ideally want to enter at below 270 so have put in an order at 269 but will have to watch this one. I think it is a good bet, solid business, up tick in business from Olympics and Bond films. Results announcement on 7 Mar and I think it might be a positive announcement.

So with the Cineworld bet I will be back to my ideal 18 bets.
